Over twenty years ago, I picked up a camera and decided I was going to find a way to make a living out of photography. I had a degree in Art History and saw photographs as an extension of my education. It was another way of looking, seeing, interpreting and documenting life.
The experience has proved to be a stimulating visual adventure. Assignments with top U.S. and European publications have taken me to many parts of the world. I love to shoot on location but am also happy to spend time in my studio with my medium-format camera, losing myself in the exploration of a tabletop composition.
I took many of the photos on this website while working on cookbooks, advertising campaigns, book covers, magazine stories or portrait sessions. Taking a good shot often involves using skills that go beyond the camera: communication, creative problem solving, thinking inside and outside of the box simultaneously. Languages come in handy. Fluency in French and Italian has helped me deal effectively with everyone from Sophia Loren to fishermen in Marseille. The human element is an essential part of what I do. I’m at ease working on my own or with others. I often team up with a chef or food stylist when on assignment. When I’m not on assignment – a process that usually means working with color stock or digital – I love to combine two passions: walking and shooting black-and-white 35mm film. You will see some of the results of my wanderings in the Portfolio section where I’ve put together a short essay featuring my Paris street photography. I hope this on-going project will one day become a book. I feel very fortunate to have chosen such a varied and motivating profession that I can share with others. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss a photography project or see more of my work. Thanks for dropping by my site. All the best, Alison alison@alisonharris.com
